5 EPUB Translators for Reading Books in English
Compare five options and discover an easy way to translate your library.
DocBabel Team

A good EPUB translator should help you go from the original file to a copy you can read in another language. Getting a few sentences translated isn’t enough: you also need to process the book, review the result, and have a useful format to download.
DocBabel is our recommendation for readers looking to translate a complete EPUB with a tool designed for books. Upload your EPUB, and DocBabel handles the translation. Then you can read the result online or download it as an EPUB or PDF.
In this DocBabel guide, we compare five options based on what matters when translating a book: ease of use, output formats, and cost. Our choice for a reading library is DocBabel: direct EPUB upload, translation handled by the app, and downloads in two formats.
What you need from an EPUB translator
Start with the result: do you want to download a translated book, read the original and translation side by side, or work on individual sentences? Each goal calls for different controls and review.
For reading books in another language, it helps to choose a tool that brings file upload, translation, and download together. That way, you can spend less time preparing the document and more time reading.
| Tool | How it works | Price | Average cost per book | Approximate time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DocBabel | Upload the EPUB and it’s translated | Pro: 9.99 USD/month, 20 books | ≈0.50 USD when all 20 books are used | 16.7 s in the Alice example¹ |
| OpenL | Upload the EPUB and select the output | Quote per document | Depends on quote | No published EPUB estimate |
| BookTranslator.ai | Upload the book and accept the quote | From 6.99 USD per job | Reference: 6.99–9.99 USD per 100,000 words | Minutes, according to the provider |
| BookTranslator.app | Upload the book and choose the output | Quote based on file | Depends on quote | Minutes, according to the provider |
| ChatGPT | Give instructions and organize the translation | Depends on your plan | No fixed per-book rate | Varies by sections and preparation |
¹ Measured with a 26,525-word TXT, from starting the translation until receiving the result. Time depends on the book. DocBabel Pro’s cost is calculated as 9.99 ÷ 20; the full monthly fee is charged.
1. DocBabel: From EPUB to a translation you can read
DocBabel focuses on translating books and documents. Its workflow lets you select the EPUB and target language without preparing instructions for each section or installing desktop software. The app organizes the processing and brings the result together for reading or download.
It’s especially convenient if you have several books waiting and want to use the same process for all of them: upload, choose a language, review, and read. It also supports PDFs with selectable text and TXT files, so you can work with those formats without looking for a different service for each one.
How to translate your EPUB
The process takes three steps:
- Upload your EPUB, up to 50 MB, to the DocBabel translator.
- Choose a language and start the translation. The app organizes the book’s processing.
- Read or download. Open the result in the online reader or export it as an EPUB or PDF.
You don’t need to write prompts, copy chapters between conversations, or collect responses in a separate document. That workflow is built into DocBabel.
A translated book that fits the way you read
The online reader lets you open the translation in your browser. The EPUB download works with compatible reading apps; PDF is a convenient alternative for viewing the document. You can choose the output format without switching tools.
The output is a new reading edition of the translated content, not an exact replica of the original layout. If you’re working with an illustrated edition or complex notes, include those elements in your review.
Subscription pricing
Hobby costs 3.99 USD per month and includes five translations; Pro costs 9.99 USD per month and includes twenty. Each complete translation uses one credit. PDF and EPUB downloads are included in the complete translation workflow.
With Pro, each book costs about 0.50 USD if you use all twenty translations in a month. For 9.99 USD per month, you can translate twenty titles and download them as EPUB or PDF. It’s an especially economical option for expanding your English-language library. See DocBabel plans.
A result you can examine
Here is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, translated from English into Spanish with DocBabel. The input file was a TXT containing 26,525 words. You can download the original used and the translated draft.
The result includes all twelve chapters and shows what a complete work translated with DocBabel looks like. The links provide the input text and translation without subsequent editing.
2. OpenL Doc Translator: An option for bilingual output
OpenL advertises EPUB input and downloads of translated and bilingual versions. It’s worth considering if you want both languages in the same document. Its page also promises to preserve formatting elements; check that claim with a file containing your notes, tables, or images. To assess the cost, use the quote for your document.
3. BookTranslator.ai: Pay per book
BookTranslator.ai offers a pay-per-book model with no subscription. Its page lists reference prices of 6.99 USD and 9.99 USD per 100,000 words, depending on the option, notes that the calculation is approximate, and provides the specific amount in the next step. It may suit you if you prefer to pay for a specific job. Compare that quote with DocBabel’s monthly fee and the number of translations you’d actually use.
4. BookTranslator.app: Another EPUB-focused tool
BookTranslator.app is a different product from BookTranslator.ai. Its comparison describes EPUB export and bilingual options. Check which output is included in the option you choose, and test a chapter with the specific features of your book. If you have several titles waiting, also consider DocBabel Pro’s twenty books: about 0.50 USD per title when you use the full plan.
5. ChatGPT: Control through instructions
ChatGPT lets you work with files and give instructions about their content. It can be useful for exploring two translations of a sentence, agreeing on a glossary, or reviewing tone. The workflow requires you to define what text gets translated, how you’ll check coverage, and what file you need at the end. Available capabilities depend on your account and tools. The ChatGPT documentation explains working with files and projects.
If you want to upload a book, choose a language, and receive a readable copy, DocBabel offers controls dedicated to that task. If you want to discuss translation decisions, working with an assistant can be part of your review.
How to compare a translation without trusting fluency alone
Choose a passage with more than simple sentences: dialogue, a negation, a reference to an earlier character, or a term that appears repeatedly. Use the same passage when comparing results.
This original example is for practicing review; it is not an output measured from any tool:
Original: “Mara did not open the letter until Friday. By then, her brother had already left.”
Reference translation: «Mara no abrió la carta hasta el viernes. Para entonces, su hermano ya se había marchado».
«Mara no abrió la carta el viernes» also sounds natural, but it changes when the action takes place. Check details like this as well as fluency.
Then review the whole file in sections: the beginning, middle, and end. Look for changed names, repeated paragraphs, unexpected breaks, and missing chapters. In a book with notes, check that each callout leads to the corresponding explanation. If you plan to publish the translation, carry out a complete bilingual review.
Questions to ask before choosing your EPUB translator
Do I have to convert my EPUB to PDF to use DocBabel?
No. You can upload an EPUB directly. Keeping the original file avoids an advance conversion step that you’d otherwise need to review separately.
Does DocBabel translate the book or summarize it?
DocBabel is designed to translate the book’s content. Select the file and language, and the app organizes the complete translation without requiring you to request each chapter separately.
Which option is cheapest?
DocBabel Pro is our per-book cost pick for frequent translators: about 0.50 USD per title when you use all twenty monthly translations. The subscription costs 9.99 USD per month and includes the online reader and EPUB/PDF downloads. Compared with the 6.99 USD minimum published by BookTranslator.ai per job, the unit cost is much lower when you make full use of Pro. For a service with variable quotes, compare the price for your file.
Can I open the result in an e-reader?
Yes. Download the translation as an EPUB and open it in a compatible app or device. You can also choose PDF or use the DocBabel online reader.
Your next book, in your language
With direct EPUB upload, an online reader, and EPUB/PDF export, DocBabel is our recommendation for translating books without organizing the work chapter by chapter. Upload the file, choose the language, and read the translation your usual way.
You can also read how to translate a large PDF or how to organize a book translation with ChatGPT.
